Visit to Janakalyan Society – 07-April-2010

Visit to New Juniors Janakalyan Society

We arrived at the school and were greeted with a loud good morning by the children and their teachers. Onee Bhaumik, the Principal and her band of dedicated teachers were so happy to see us and to receive the exercise books for the children. Parivaar has given this school their Exercise books for the whole year.

We got to see their work and specially their drawings as it was the drawing class. Its amazing the talent these young ones have and were proud to show us their books. These poor children come from very low income group families but are doing a wonderful job by studying here and since this school is only from KG to Class II, they are helped with admission into a senior school after this. In fact Onee Bhaumk the Principal told us that they were proud that 8 students who passed out from this small school have done their Class X Boards this year.

Thos who had passed out earlier have joined the Army, TATA AIG, and are now earning for their family and improving the standard of living. This school gives a good foundation for these children. The school topper, Mahesh Sahu showed us his Report Card which can be viewed on our Site on Picassa.

We asked the Teachers and Principal what else we could help them with and they showed us one class which has few fans and they need at least 3 table fans which they will mount on the walls so all the children get breeze during their classes. We promised to look into this request.

The children pay a monthly fee of Rs.100/- and the 4 teachers get Rs.1500/- per month and the 2 helpers Rs.700/p.m.

The 2 young visitors Nikita and Samanta Mendonca spent quality time with the little ones and enjoyed their visit to this school. The observation that they made was that the classrooms which are really small need a coat of paint which will brighten up the place and look clean for the children to study in. We were also informed by the Principal that some children do not have money to bring tiffin from home but they never touch the tiffins of those who bring them. The school now keeps biscuits/muri for these children so they also get something small to eat during the tiffin break.

It was time well spent at this school and the cheery waves from the children left us with such a good feeling in our hearts. Parivaar has done for them that no one has ever done and for this the school is truly grateful.
