Kerala Flood Relief

Kerela, the “God’s own country” was devastated by floods during the month of August in 2018. This was the worst flood to hit the state in over a century. A calamity of such nature required Herculean effort during and after the floods. Contributions and help came in from Anglo-Eastern offices across the country and abroad. Staff on leave volunteered to help in the restoration process. The Cochin chapter of Anavi along with the Chennai chapter coordinated efforts on site to bring normalcy to lives of the affected.

Activities Coordinated From Kochi

  • Volunteering and supports in Relief camps
  • Supplied and transported medicine and other materials as required.
  • Joined different volunteering initiatives for cleaning lead the teams.
  • Gave safety briefing to different volunteer groups

Technical Team For maintenance and Survey @ Ernakulam

  • Formed technical team consist of Anglo Engineers, Electrical officers and officers.
  • Meeting with the Superintendent of Police, Aluva who was in charge of maintenance in the flood affected area in Ernakulam. They asked our help to do maintenance and survey in the affected areas to reconnect the electricity.
  • Meeting with the Assistant Engineer, Kerala State Electricity Board, Aluva to discuss about the jobs to be done.
  • Purchased tools(Multimeter, megger etc) and electrical items( ELCB, MCB, Switches, Wires, LED bulbs, etc)to carry out the jobs
  • Attended total of 15 Houses- In 10 houses conducted minor repairs and electrical survey and rectification. Provided LED bulb where no bulbs we’re available. Restored the power.
  • In 5 houses, survey results were negative and the insulation was so low to restore the power. As the people are staying there in the houses in this condition, we made an temporary parallel switch board though which we provided LED lights, one electrical plug and socket and power socket and plug for electrical motor connections.
  • Carried our minor plumbing/mechanical repairs

Students Team @ Ernakulam

  • Formed a team of volunteers from the students of Govt. Law college Ernakulam.
  • We guided and aided this team with safety briefings, other job instructions, safely gears, tools and cleaning materials.
  • The team did clearing in North Paravur areas- 13 houses, pubic places such as bus stops, road etc.
  • Team involved in packing and transportation of items for the local govt.
  • Team assisted Ernakulam Collectorate in their activities under their instructions.
  • This team conducted survey for the estimation of losses on behalf of local govt. We provided logistical support.
  • Assisted in collecting information about the victims to distribute Anglo utensils kits.

Students Team @ Thrissur

  • This team is formed from the students of Govt. Law college, Thrissur.
  • Group was lead by our engineer Basil Joy.
  • Cleaning tools and materials were provided by Anglo eastern.
  • Cleaned 10 houses in Mala- Chalakkudi area.
  • Transported cleaning materials from Palakkad to Thissur and Ernakulam.
  • Transported cloth items from Thrissur to Palakkad.

Students team @ Chrngannur

  • Team formed from students of Chengannur Engineering college team.
  • Gave guidance and safely briefing by sending one of the Ernakulam team mambers to Chengannur.
  • Locally purchased/arranged cleaning materials, tools and safely gears by AE.
  • The team cleaned their own college which was the one of the dedicated camp for flood victims.
  • Cleaned more than 10 houses.

Distribution of Utensils @ Ernakulam

  • Identified the candidates with the help of students team, Ernakulam.
  • Main criteria for selection were, family with members above 70 years old, Disability, Without an earning member, etc.
  • Purchased items from Lulu’s Ernakulam store and distributed at Edappally by AE team and students team, Ernakulam. Invited all candidates to the distribution centre

Anavi distributed Flood Relief Kit to 93 families at Kuttanadu on 17 Oct 18. Items distributed were Mixie/ grinder, LPG Gas Stove, half HP mono-block pump set, Pressure Cooker and kitchen utensils. We have covered seven panchayats in Kuttanad, which was the worst affected area during the flood. Local Seva Bharathi volunteers helped us in preparing list of eligible family, gathered them together yesterday at Ramankari Community Hall and helped us to distribute the items smoothly. Capt.
